New Boiler Motherwell

New boiler installation

In this blog post from HeatTech we aim to answer a few common questions we are often asked around the subject of replacement boilers. A replacement boiler can be a big investment and careful consideration and research should be  carried out prior to making your purchase.

Do I need a new boiler?

This is the most common question we are asked by customers experiencing heating problems. Many customers have been told by their heating cover provider that parts for their old boiler are now obsolete and the boiler beyond economical repair. On many occasions this is not the case. Parts are still available for many old boilers and we find its very rare that a part is unavailable. It is often the case that the price of the part is the issue. We always provide a quote to repair and if the customer requests it we will also provide a quote to replace the boiler. We then advise the customer and let them decide whether it makes more financial sense to them to go with the repair or opt for a new boiler. New boilers are more efficient than older models and will provide a saving in energy costs, they also carry a manufacturers warranty which will cover any repairs for upto 10 years. Over the life of the appliance this could mean the appliance has paid for itself.

How much does a new boiler cost?

The cost of a boiler replacement can vary depending on many factors including your location, the condition of your current heating system, the type and brand of boiler you require as well as any additional items you require such as magnetic filters or new controls. Typically the cost to replace a boiler "like for like" is between £1,200 - £2,500. The difference in cost comes down largely to the brand of boiler you choose.

Which brand is best?

At HeatTech we supply and install boilers from all the leading manufacturers, Vokera, Baxi, Ideal, Vaillant, Worcester Bosch and more. Each brand has their own unique selling points, be it cost, build quality, warranty periods or product support. We always provide 3 quotes for a boiler replacement offering "budget" "mid range" and "premium" options.  The more expensive models tend to be better made, more user friendly and carry extended warranty periods. Our advice generally is go with the best you can afford.

How long does it take to replace a boiler?

Most boiler replacements can be completed in 1 day. Should you require extra work to bring your heating system upto date or if there are any improvements or extras you would like then the installation could possible run into a 2nd day. The duration of the job would be outlined to you at the quote stage.

What Type Of Boiler Do I Have?

The 4 most common boiler types in homes in the UK consist of:

▪️Combi Boilers

These are the most common boilers we come accross. A combi boiler provides your heating and hot water from one unit. There are no storage tanks anywhere and you have mains pressure hot water whenever you need it

▪️Heat Only Boilers

A heat only boiler has very few internal components and will use external storage tanks,  motorised valves, pump, and a hot water cylinder.  Heat only systems are more traditional and many people choose to upgrade to a combi boiler.

▪️System Boiler

A system boiler works in a similar way to a heat only boiler,  there will be a seperate hot water tank and there may be a large cold water tank. The pump and other components are within the boiler. A system boiler will usually have a pressure gauge on the front.

▪️Back Boiler

There are still many back boilers we come accross. Normally referred to as a BBU for short they are most often sited in the fireplace of your lounge or dining room and will have a gas fire attached to it.  Back boilers are no longer available to buy and would have to be replaced with a heat only, system or combi boiler.
